Sugar is Australia’s second largest export crop and Queensland’s largest rural commodity, and is a major contributor to the Australian economy. North Queensland’s tropical temperatures are ideal for growing sugar, and approximately 95% of Australia’s sugarcane is grown in Queensland.

Sugarcane flowers from early May and throughout June, and July to November is typically the cane harvesting season for the local sugar industry. A role in the harvest leaves you ideally placed to spend your days off traveling the outback or lying on a beach in the Whitsundays.

Who we’re looking for

We’re looking for people with a positive attitude who can commit to working the sugarcane harvest.

A role in the sugarcane industry can be physically demanding yet rewarding.

If you meet the following criteria, we’d love to hear from you:

Physically fit and able to work extended hours and flexible shifts
Strong English communication skills
Enjoy a busy environment
Able to drive a car (essential)
Forklift licence (favourable but not essential)
Free from asthma and dust allergies
Able to commit to the whole season
Dedicated to keeping yourself and your team members safe.

Physical fitness and a commitment to the season

Sugarcane roles are hands-on and varied, from driving locomotives and maintaining cane rail infrastructure through to general mill work that has you on your feet all day, working at heights, lifting, and keeping operations running smoothly. Whatever role you’re in, you’ll need to be physically capable of sustained, active work – squatting, climbing, lifting, and moving across uneven surfaces. A C Class Driver’s Licence is essential across most roles, and all applicants need to be free from asthma and dust allergies.

No formal qualifications? Some of our roles don't require any.

General Mill Worker roles are open to people with no prior skills, you’ll work under supervision and learn on the job. If you do have a background in machinery or tractor operation, the Locomotive Driver’s Assistant role is worth a look. And if you’ve got experience working at heights or in confined spaces, that’ll put you ahead for mill-based positions. Whatever your background, tell us what you’ve got and we’ll match you to the right role.

Agri Labour Australia is totally committed to ensuring the safety of all our staff, and all successful applicants are required to participate in inductions, training and pre-employment education so they’re equipped with the necessary safety knowledge and appropriate skills prior to starting work. Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing will be carried out prior to harvest and randomly throughout the season.
