Job description

Our client is an industry leading agribusiness with sophisticated piggery operations located in Girgarre and surrounds. They are currently looking to fill 50 Piggery Farm Hand positions across their farming sites, with work commencing from September 2026 onwards.

You are required to work in a piggery environment where dust and the smell of livestock is present. Not afraid of getting your hands dirty, you will be comfortable working with live and deceased pigs; all animals must be handled gently and compassionately. You will be a team player who is physically fit and more than able to handle heavy lifting.

You will be working across multiple departments including the Nursery, Grower and Finishing section, the Farrowing and Lactation section and the Mating and Gestation sections. As a Piggery Farm Hand, you play a key role in supporting our clients large scale commercial Pork production facility.

You will be paid under Pastoral Award – Level 1, an hourly rate of $25.74 per hour, with a minimum of 38 hours of work, per week. This will be aligned with the Fair Work Commission’s annual reviews, including any increases to the National Minimum Wage and minimum rates of pay. You will be offered between 1-4 years of work with potential to upskill.

Key duties include:

Assist with daily tasks in the Nursery, Grower & Finishing sections:

  • Ensure feed availability
  • Adjust feeders
  • Check waterers
  • Monitor individual pig health
  • Monitor barn and pen environments; temperature and air quality
  • Maintain section cleanliness and sanitation
  • Dead pig removal
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Ensure that animals in the section are treated humanely and within the provisions of the Animal Welfare Code

Assist with daily tasks in the Farrowing & Lactation section:

  • Sow Feeding
  • Check waterers
  • Sow and piglet condition
  • Monitor individual sow and piglet health
  • Assist with the farrowing process
  • Piglet processing
  • Monitor room and crate environments; temperature and air quality
  • Maintain section cleanliness and sanitation
  • Dead pig removal
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Ensure that animals in the section are treated humanely and within the provisions of the Animal Welfare Code

Assist with daily tasks in the Mating & Gestation section:

  • Sow Feeding
  • Check waterers
  • Sow and gilt condition
  • Monitor individual sow and gilt health
  • Assist with estrus detection
  • Perform artificial inseminations
  • Monitor barn and pen environments; temperature and air quality
  • Maintain section cleanliness and sanitation
  • Dead pig removal
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Ensure that animals in the section are treated humanely and within the provisions of the Animal Welfare Code

Oversee and perform daily tasks in the Environmental area:

  • Check tractor and quad bike oil level daily before operation
  • Ensure sump stirrer is functioning
  • Start irrigator and ensure proper function
  • Empty solids spreader as required to prevent overflow
  • Gather dead animals and dispose properly
  • Manage composting area and process
  • Ensure main gate is closed and locked after staff arrive
  • Complete required effluent records
  • Complete dead animal records
  • Keep pump shed clean and tidy
  • Keep “outside the fence” area including sheds at gate area clean and tidy
  • Fresh water flush effluent system
  • Wash down effluent pad
  • Empty rubbish bins as required
  • Assist unit staff as directed by Maintenance Team Leader
  • Ensure that animals in the unit are treated humanely and within the provisions of the Animal Welfare Code

Characteristics and Aptitudes:

To be considered for the roles, it’s important you are committed to maintaining animal welfare standards and meet the following criteria:

  • Comfortable working in a livestock environment
  • Good communication skills and able to follow instructions
  • No asthma or dust allergies
  • Live locally or be happy to relocate to Girgarre
  • Physically fit and comfortable in carrying out labour intensive duties
  • Comfortable working in direct contact with poultry in a smelly environment
  • Able to follow directions and work unsupervised whilst showing high levels of initiative
  • A team player and happy working with a multicultural team
