With farms situated mainly in the northern areas of the country, mango season offers diverse roles in sought-after tropical locations – providing travellers, grey nomads and seasonal workers with great job and travel opportunities.

The roles

Mango season has a wide variety of roles on offer for both skilled and unskilled workers. The Western Australia harvest starts in October, with Queensland and the Northern Territory commencing in November. The season usually runs for 4-6 weeks, with some mango farms harvesting for almost three months and the last of the work completed by February.

Picking mangoes can be hard and hot work, with temperatures often averaging 30°C and above. Some farms harvest their mangoes by hand, whilst others use a pole that can take some time to master. Some of the jobs include:

  • packers and labellers
  • graders
  • stackers
  • pallet controllers
  • dispatch operators
  • bin runners
  • harvest-aid drivers
  • forklift operators
  • water truck drivers
  • water boy/girl.

Who we need

You’ll need to have an excellent work ethic and be free of mango allergies, skin sensitivity or colour blindness. It’s very important you commit to working the entire season and are physically capable of performing long hours picking outdoors, or grading, packing and stacking in the sheds.

A successful mango harvest requires a positive team attitude amongst a group of workers who understand the importance of keeping themselves and their colleagues safe at all times. Those with previous experience in mango or citrus harvests are urged to apply, along with people equipped with forklift and truck licences.

If you meet the following criteria, we’d love to hear from you:

  • physically fit and able to work extended hours and flexible shifts
  • able to pass all drug and alcohol tests
  • high level of English communication skills
  • free from skin sensitivity, colour blindness and mango allergies
  • heavy rigid truck licence (or higher) and front-end loader licence are highly favourable
  • committed to the whole season
  • enjoy a busy environment
  • are a team player
  • hold a driver’s licence
  • dedicated to keeping yourself and your team members safe.
